Pumba upgrade Smittybilt SRC roofrack

Our TJ wrangler (Pumba) has been in major need of a space capacity upgrade. Everyone who sees us pull up to camp can’t believe we manage to fit all our camp gear inside the TJ. To be honest our camping luxuries come at the cost of space for the dogs so this upgrade was for the dogs as much as us. The dogs fit in here somewhere.

More space has been on the agenda for a while and after some careful consideration we have installed the Smittybilt SRC roof rack to the Jeep.

Installation was a breeze, until it wasn’t. The racks are supposed to be a simple TJ bolt on but for anyone with a stock bumper, some extra work is required. The SRC racks need some of the bolt hole sizes increased if your fitting onto a stock bumper. This meant drilling out the existing holes on the rack to fit to the stock bumper. Not being prepared for this did create some unexpected headaches but we got there in the end. Other than that the installation is pretty straight forward. This was certainly not a one man job and I was lucky enough to have some extra hands to help out.

The few headaches aside the upgrade looks amazing. We also added a ridge rider cargo cage from Supercheap to the upgrade. I have read some reviews about these not lasting too long before they start to rust but sometimes you just want to get the job done and Supercheap was the closest option. We will see how this goes.

We are really excited for Easter to try out our additional space… just hoping we can get an upgrade to suspension before we go as the extra space doesn’t yet mean extra weight.

In Australia it can be difficult to get parts for old Wranglers but jeepkonection.com.au are amazing. A bit of a wait for them to have these in stock from the USA but once their stock arrived we had it within 2 weeks delivered straight to our door. Definitely recommend them.
